Cupcakes seem to be all the rage these days, as they offer a different kind of pastry appeal to the masses. Even weddings have evolved to shun the traditional wedding cake, relying on cupcakes instead to keep guests happy. Well, if you have a penchant for whipping up something delicious in the kitchen, how about giving the Mini Cupcake Factory a go? Retailing for just $19.99 a pop, they will definitely appeal to the geek since it is small and cute, featuring an extremely high crust-to-cake ratio thanks to its small nature. Featuring an outer layer of extra caramelized batter, it will soak up some of the oil during the baking process. The cupcakes themselves will cook in a mere 5 minutes, and if you throw in the time spent mixing and heating the cupcake pan, it takes a grand total of just 10 minutes. Each round of cooking will net you 7 cupcakes in total. Hungry already?

Lighted Stovetop lets you pick the color

The first keyboard and mouse I owned that actually allowed me to pick the color of the lighting had me captivated.  To me it was the greatest invention ever created at the time.  Thankfully LED lighting has not been limited to just computer accessories.  Sure, there have been times when the LED lights go a little overboard, but in the case of this stovetop, it just enhances the looks.

This bright white style makes your stovetop look a whole lot more modern and chic.  If you’re the type that loves to paint and try all different colors just to change things up a little, then this would be a handy item to have around.  Not only is it filled with LED lights, but ones that change colors.  That means you can change out the coloring time and time again to go with your décor.  This is from Gorenje’s “Touch of Light” collection that was designed by Karim Rashid.  That sadly means that this will probably be a little hard to get your hands on by being either expensive or just limited in numbers.

Popcorn Grabber ensures you limit your popcorn intake

Popcorn is one snack that you can just continue munching without realizing just how much calories you have devoured – and that is a very dangerous thing in the long run since we all know that health is wealth, and getting on the road to obesity is not something anyone wants voluntarily. Well, here’s a novel method to control your popcorn intake – using the Japan-hailed Popcorn Grabber. Also known as the Potechi no Te popcorn grabber, it ensures you eat nothing but a single popcorn at any one time, doing away with your old habit of cramming in as much popcorn into your mouth as possible with each handful. Sounds like a cool idea, but chances are most people will get frustrated at its inefficiency after a few mouthfuls that they would probably throw it away and return to their old habits.

Do You Play With Your Food?

This is a neat idea to make kids meal times a bit more fun, the Chew-Chew Train.

The Urban Trend Chew-Chew Train© is a great way to make sure your kids eat their entire meal. This Chew-Chew Train© transforms from a train into a functional dinner set. The engine becomes the cup, the conductor’s house becomes a bowl, the train’s platform becomes the plate and the coupling rods become the fork and spoon. Keep your kids entertained while they eat their meals. Gone are the days of not playing with your food.

More info and images can be found over on Urban Trends. Also check out the Build-A-Meal, which turns dinner time into a construction site (could get messy).

Breville Hot Cup saves on energy

Recently I wrote up a Philips Kettle that promised to save energy and give you a hot cup of water fast.  However, I have to say after looking over the Breville Hot Cup, I like it a whole lot better.  Granted my reasons may seem a little silly, but I imagine it’ll appeal to a great deal of others.  This device boils just as fast, saving you energy, but you don’t have to refill the water quite so often.

With this you just fill up the tank and then set the size of the cup you’d like to fill.  It’s all pretty basic as far as the usage goes.  Thankfully, despite the simple usage it has a smart design that’ll help you save on your energy bill.  You can purchase it for £59.99 or about $90 through Nigel’s Eco Store.

When it comes to cutting back on the amount of energy you use, it’s a game of cutting small corners in every area.  If you boil water for your tea, this Philips Kettle is yet another corner you can cut.  It makes the art of boiling water a whole lot more precise and therefore cutting back on the amount of energy you use while boiling.

The energy efficient kettle has a measuring guide that lets you know just how many cups of water are within it.  Thanks to the flat heating element it boils the water much faster and uses less energy.  It’s also easy to clean thanks to that same flat element.  To let you know when it’s done, the light stays on while the kettle is doing its work and kicks off when the water is boiling.

Countertop display tells you what to do with your food

Some of you might remember when we reported on the Smart Fridge that can tally the food in your fridge, and even figure out what recipes to make from them.

This is the Oasis system, which takes essentially the same technology and puts it on the kitchen countertop. For example, slapping a side of beef on the countertop will cause the nutritional stats to be displayed next to it, thanks to the pico-projector that is mounted above the counter.

When you put the green pepper beside it, you can get a whole bunch of great recipes. I would assume that it would suggest steak fajitas. I wonder if you assemble all the ingredients, it will even show you the recipes with videos and such.

I wonder if future advancements could make it detect whether the food is good or not, and then project a red X on it or something.

My source even imagines this tech being taken out of the kitchen and into every room. For example, a bathroom counter that can identify pills, and a living room table that can detect…chip and dip combinations.

Well, I suppose some uses are better than others, but you have to admire where this technology could go.

Sure you ain’t no MacGyver who can come up with great solutions to all of the tight situations which you’re in, but sometimes, just sometimes, you might be able to rescue a situation simlpy because you have the right tool (without thinking about making one out of your surroundings). What we bring you today would be the CRKT Eat’N Tool, where it was invented by NYC designer Liong Mah. Looking like a mini spork of sorts at first glance, it offers far more than that, being full well capable of popping bottles open, functioning as a screwdriver for quick fixes to your equipment or even help you pry open canisters. Apart from that, each $6.99 purchase comes with a trio of metric wrench reliefs (10 mm, 8 mm, 6 mm) and a carabiner. What we like most about this pocket-sized tool is, you won’t need to use your hands to eat food anywhere else again.
