Use the face for Nintendo DSi game

Posted by admin | Filed under Gaming Gadgets

We all know that Microsoft is turning the whole body into a controller with the Kinect. Nintendo didn’t have anything like that for the Wii at E3 last month, because I guess they thought the 3DS was enough.

There is a game for the DSiWare that does use your body as a controller, even though it is just your face. The game is called “Kao Glider”, which translates into “Face Glider”.

Kao Glider is played by the user moving his or her face around. I presume that the DSi uses the camera to capture where the face is. So if you move your face up, the glider goes up. Move it down, the glider goes down, and so on.

Now here is the real question. Do you really want to look like an idiot playing Kao Glider on a bus, train, airplane, or any other place where you are seen in public? I suppose you would if you want to humiliate yourself, but it is a way to get attention.

I wonder what other type of “face games” you can create. I’m not just talking about games for the DSi Ware. After all, that iPhone 4 has that awesome front-facing camera. Surely there will be an App made for a face-moving game on the iPhone.

Love gaming a whole lot? Then you might probably already have experienced the joys (and pain) of building your very own gaming rig in the past, but if you think that you prefer to skip the entire process this time round, then you might want to check out the Acer Aspire Predator AG7750 gaming PC. This lean mean gaming machine is ready to rock and roll right out of the box (in the Great White North, unfortunately), where it will run on an Intel Core i7 quad core processor, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX470 graphics with 3-way SLI support and an insane 9GB of DDR3 memory which ought to blow all performance benchmarks out of the water, just make sure you have the skills to eliminate your opponents since we don’t think you can complain about choppy framerates affecting your game anymore with the Aspire Predator AG7750.

When it comes to internal storage space, you won’t be disappointed since the Acer Aspire Predator AG7750 will feature a total of 1TB of storage space thanks to its internal SATA hard drive. Apart from that, there are also three more easy-swap hard disk drive cages, which brings the grand total to four Serial ATA 3G/bs high-capacity hard disks which can be topped up to, not to mention having each single drive hold another 2TB of storage space. With 8TB of space to play around with, you would do well to have a great file organizing system lest your memory fails you and everything ends up in a mess.

As for entertainment, you can enjoy high-definition 7.1-channel audio, courtesy of Creative THX TruStudio PC and EAX 5.0 technology for a tubthumping experience. With its state-of-the-art, two-part liquid cooling system, you can be sure the Acer Aspire Predator AG7750 remains running nice and cool even when pushed to its maximum, giving you added peace of mind that it isn’t going to end up in a billow of smoke during the most crucial of moments under the highest graphical resolution settings. Expect to fork out around $1,799 CAD for the Acer Aspire Predator AG7750.

Microsoft introduces new Xbox 360 4GB bundle

Microsoft has just announced a brand new way to spend your summer, and they don’t want you to do it outdoors. No sir, the big M prefers you to use up most of your waking time indoors thanks to a new controller-free way of playing video games with their spanking new Kinect system which will come bundled with an all-new Xbox 360 6GB console. Of course, what is the point of having all the hardware in the world when you do not have any software to go along with it? Microsoft has certainly not overlooked that fact, and will be rolling out “Kinect Adventures” packaged together in the bundle, retailing for $299.99 a pop.

Just in case you were wondering how you’re going to sweat it out with “Kinect Adventures,” you will have to open up yourself to 20 different adventures, where among them include navigating through roaring rapids and ducking and dodging through mountaintop obstacle courses and other exotic locations. All of those are done without having to worry about mashing buttons on a controller since there is none – in fact, all you need to do is make sure the Kinect device is properly calibrated and you’re good to go. Not only that, for those who want to get in on the fun but already own an Xbox 360 console can always pick up the Kinect sensor with “Kinect Adventures” separately for $149.99. The Kinect sensor itself, just in case you do not know, is capable of tracking your full body movements, respond to your voice and deliver a multiplayer experience right out of the box.

There will be a new Xbox 360 4GB console that will ship from August 3 onwards later this year in the US for $199.99 a pop, boasting a sleek new design, built-in Wi-Fi N connectivity, up to 4GB of internal flash memory (as you can tell by its model name), touch-sensitive buttons and a black matte finish – hopefully without any of its predecessor’s overheating issues.

Hopscotch Hero, probably not coming to video consoles anytime soon

I don’t think my Source for this story says that London design agency Tinker actually calls its latest creation Hopscotch Hero. Considering it is a digital representation of a game that probably involves light up areas to keep rhythm, what else would you call it?

Yeah, you might as well name it after the successful video game franchise of Guitar Hero. That seems quite natural, but it feels unnatural to take something as simple as hopscotch and put a technical spin on it.

I can’t help but think that Tinker saw a bunch of schoolchildren playing hopscotch and just said: “that is not enough”. Just like the guy who invented Pong was probably inspired by tennis.

The Hopscotch Hero, as I’m sure it will always be known as, has a vertical display that shows the player’s hops along with a floor-based sensor for recording movement. I wonder if the player has to throw some sort of electronic stone or something. I think that is one way to play hopscotch, as I have forgotten how, really.

Well, if these Hopscotch Hero guys are serious about his creation, then that is one heck of a video game peripheral that players will have to buy, let me tell you. Couldn’t they just make a huge Dance Dance Revolution pad or connect to the Kinect?

Super Mario Kart: The Board Game

Posted by admin | Filed under Gaming Gadgets

The other day, I discovered something very disturbing about myself and the rest of the world: we are addicted to franchises. Most of the movies this summer have been sequels or movie-versions of concepts with a proven track-record of success. I went and saw The Last Airbender, and even though I enjoyed the film, I realized that I had paid to see a movie that didn’t need to be made, because Avatar:The Last Airbender series was so good.

In the same manner, I can honestly say that we probably don’t need this board game version of Super Mario Kart. After all, there is already a video game of the same name that will give players more of a rush, and the board game looks despairingly unoriginal. I’ve seen games where two players go head-to-head, and have to maneuver marbles across obstacles before. The only difference is that Super Mario Kart version has some authentic sound effects from the video game. Of course, I don’t want to judge it too harshly simply because it is part of a franchise, I haven’t played it for myself.

This board game was created by Epoch, and it was on display at the 2010 Tokyo Toy Show. I would imagine that it will probably be out shortly. Not only that, it will probably make the amount of money that it is projected, maybe even more. This is what happens when you bank on franchises.

Milo and Kate for the Xbox 360 Kinect

We covered the official announcement of the Kinect at E3, and I would imagine that game designers are going nuts to create new worlds of interactivity for Xbox 360 gamers.

Peter Molyneux, designer of famed video games franchises like Black and White and Fable has created a new game called Milo and Kate, which crosses into a very realistic realm of gaming.

In the game, the player gets to “mentor” a boy named Milo or a girl named Kate. The players can ask questions that will have the gaming characters respond back in a very artificial way (for now) and even “catch” virtual things that players throw at them. You can also pick up after them, and I believe there is an interesting conversation by Milo or Kate’s parents that the player overhears about a move of some kind.

Okay, this is getting into an area of gaming that I never thought we would have. By the way, the character of Milo and Kate isn’t just in the programming of the game. The mind of this virtual character is “cloud hosted”, so it “grows” with periodic updates from its host.

I suppose that Milo and Kate could prepare players for mentoring a real person, or maybe even parenting a child. Either way, I’m not even certain I can call it a game.

PDP unveils new Special Edition AFTERGLOW Prismatic series for gamers

PDP, otherwise known as Performance Designed Products, is currently an industry leader when you think about the design and manufacturing of products for all major video game platforms. Well, PDP has recently announced that they have a lovely surprise for hardcore gamers when Q4 of this year rolls around, where they will follow up on their highly successful AFTERGLOW line of illuminated video game controllers by introducing the Special Edition AFTERGLOW Prismatic series. True to tradition, the AFTERGLOW Prismatic line will be able to cater to the entire range of today’s video game consoles, where among them include the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, as well as an extra special dual pack for the Nintendo Wii. This will definitely help gamers who want to have a twist to their gaming peripherals stand out from the rest of the crowd, where it will also function as talking fodder just in case your gaming skills are not up to scratch.

So what is it exactly that the AFTERGLOW Prismatic controllers offer? Well, they offer a similar design as the original AFTERGLOW controllers, although you will have a special new feature which will be kept under wraps at least until the Penny Arcade Expo occurs, where it will be held in Seattle, WA from September 3 through 5.

According to Gerry Block, Senior Product Manager at the California-based gaming manufacturer, “E3 2010 was an amazing show for PDP. The critical reception of our Tron, Epic Mickey, Kinect, PlayStation MOVE, and NERF product lines was spectacular, but we made a choice to keep the AFTERGLOW Prismatic line in reserve. When we give our fans the first look at the Prismatic controllers during PAX Prime in September, gamers are going to be blown away once again.”

When you pick up any PDP product, you can be assured of the highest level of quality and comfort, although we won’t rule out the classic PlayStation thumb forming if you happen to spend more time gaming compared to the rest of the activities throughout the day. We guess there is now a shifting trend that moves toward beautiful looking controllers as well as gaming peripherals, since everyone loves aesthetically pleasing peripherals, eh?

Acer knows just how serious gamers take their gaming sessions, which is why they have come up with an updated version of their Predator gaming rig in the form of the AG7750, harnessing the pinnacle of processor, graphics and memory technologies for conquering the fiercest opponents. Getting a machine like this is a double-edged sword, since it leaves you no room to make an excuse for yourself should you lose a game to a less illustrious opponent the next time round as your hardware is faultless. Well, great champions who lose don’t make excuses for their poor performance but rather, take full responsibility for it, so the same can be applied in the world of computer gaming.

The Acer Aspire Predator was specially designed for avid gamers with a whole lot of ammunition on hand to handle whatever graphics-crunching title comes your way, with an Intel Core i7 quad-core processors running at the heart of things comlpete with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX470 graphics card with 3-way SLI support and a whopping 12GB DDR3 memory which ought to ensure your frame rates remain mighty high and then some. Of course, to purchase another two graphics cards to run it in 3-way SLI would mean a much higher power bill at the end of the month, but what price are you willing to pay when it comes to winning? Doing so will definitely add a considerable amount to the final $1,999 base system price tag, so if budget is your concern, you might want to look elsewhere or settle for a less powerful configuration.

Since the NVIDIA SLI graphics card is ready for 3D gaming, you can always throw in an Acer GD245HQ/GD235HZ 3D monitor for a fully immersive experience with NVIDIA 3D Vision, a merging of of high-tech wireless glasses and advanced software that lets you enjoy hundreds of PC games in full stereoscopic 3D glory. Storage-wise, the AG7750 will not disappoint since it comes with a 1.5TB hot-swap SATA hard drive alongside a trio of other easy-swap hard disk drive cages, giving you a maximum of four Serial ATA 3 G/bs high-capacity hard disks which can be added. Audio-wise, you will be able to enjoy high-definition 7.1-channel audio with EAX (Environmental Audio Extensions) 5.0 for clear heart pounding sound. This is a true beast of a gaming machine, get this if you don’t want to build a system from ground up.

Are you a huge fan of the Dr. Who series? Then you will probably find the TARDIS MAME Console to be worth looking into, where it was custom built from scratch to fit a MAME console within. It can be closed when not in use, and will naturally need to be opened up if you want to get some arcade action going on. Over here at Coolest Gadgets, we won’t support the illegal use of ROMs, but this could very well tempt many of you out there to start on an illegal ROM downloading spree just to make full use of such a geeky looking console.

I have officially left E3 and still tired after the Move

Posted by admin | Filed under Gaming Gadgets

I’m sure that you know that I have been at E3 all week, and I got back late yesterday.

Yes, I saw a lot of great things, and reported about them all week. I can honestly say that I didn’t try out the Kinect from Microsoft or the Nintendo 3DS because the lines were too long. I did stop by the Sony booth to play with the Move.

Yes, that’s me in the picture, and I’m playing a game known as Kung-Fu Rider. In this game, I move the stick forward to get my transport in the game going, which is on an office chair. I won’t go into detail on that, but steering is done by moving the Move to the left or the right.

This type of game playing may sound familiar to you, and yes, it is called a Wiimote. It is impossible to talk about the Move without comparing it the Wiimote, honestly. It is like talking about Microsoft’s Recycle Bin and not mention Apple’s Trash Bin.

The issue is does the Move play better than the Wiimote. I would have to say yes. Navigating a menu was a lot easier without having to worry about whether or not your stick is pointed to a sensor bar. Since the Move is connected to the Playstation Eye, the controller is much more fluid.

All in all, Nintendo is going to have to work to make their Wiimote as good as the Move. Perhaps Sony will work on making the PSP in 3D.
